Cristiano Ronaldo has missed out on the FIFA Ballon d'Or 2012 award after being eclipsed by Barcelona rival Lionel Messi.
Messi received 41.6% of the votes polled, Cristiano Ronaldo took 23.68% in second while Andres Iniesta tallied 10.91% in third.
Ronaldo had a fantastic year in 2012 and was the inspiration behind Real Madrid's La Liga title in the 2011/2012 season. However, FIFA opted to give the award to Argentine Lionel Messi for a fourth consecutive time after the diminutive Barcelona forward broke many goalscoring records.
Ronaldo will pick himself up after this disappointment and undoubtedly feature once again when the 2013 Ballon d'Or is presented next year.
