Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for former star-player Cristiano Ronaldo following Manchester United's 1-1 draw last night with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

Ferguson was in awe of Ronaldo's goal, a feat that required extraordinary athleticism, with the Scot even suggesting that it was beyond Lionel Messi's capabilities.

Ferguson, who was delighted with the scoreline on the night, said, "In the first half I was disappointed. De Gea produced some fantastic saves. But the away goal is important because Real is a fantastic team on the counter-attack. We've got a great chance.

"As I was saying, we know they are going to be a tremendous counter-attacking team. They will expect a different approach from us and we have to attack them and avoid conceding goals."

His focus then shifted to Cristiano, whom the evening seemed to belong to, "I'm proud to see how he has flourished. I don't know how you describe a goal like that. His kneecap is almost at the same height as Evra's head. I don't know if there is a player in the game who can do that. Certainly Lionel Messi couldn't do that."
